A week ago: “PTA blocks Facebook as ordered by the LHC”, and I have to admit that for a microsecond I wondered what possible sympathies the Large Hadron Collider could have for people here before I swiftly moved on to conclude it’s the Lahore High Court. A benign example of science benignly clouding my thinking- for a microsecond.
Anyway, the efficacy (or pointlessness) of the above-mentioned measure is for individuals to judge. I will talk about an interesting aspect of the nature of internet usage in Pakistan and then let the reader gauge exactly who we're kidding. Here’s a list of the top Google searches that appeared as I was playing with the most harmless keywords:
Pakistan:
Pakistani sexiest models
Pakistani girls friendship
Pakistani mujra
Oh! So that’s what they mean when they say there’s more to Pakistan than the war on terror. Men of honor!*Spartans shout-out*
LUMS:
LUMS girls
LUMS university girls
LUMS girls hostel
Trust me, I would be less heart-broken had the search brought up LUMS parking or even LUMS G.M. Habibullah. The fact that it’s a university with occasional intellectual activity is of course, obscure. What came up when I had only typed the first two letters of LUMS is left as an exercise for the reader. This also applies to the first two letters of Physics and Chemistry. Moving on,
Islam:
Islamabad girls.
Islamabad:
Islamabad girls mobile numbers.
Believe me. Not flattering.
As if my feminist ego had not been hurt enough by the blatant objectification already, I rediscovered the how's and why's of life:
How to get pregnant
How to get pregnant video
How to kiss
How to hack facebook account
Why girls wear…let me just say a particular item of clothing
Why are men attracted to…umm certain parts of human anatomy
Why girls have…this and that.
Why God, why?
Sick and tired of the insults, I decided to check out what the ‘chosen ones’ think of ‘God’s enemies’. Apart from one entry “Obama dajjal”, the results were a little surprising:
Obama:
Alien defense.
I have no idea where that came from.
Israel:
Israeli army girls.
I must say, exemplary tolerance!
The funniest surprise came with Bush, where the entry ‘Bush shoe-game’ was followed by…Bushra Ansari cleavage. Seriously? There really is something for everyone out there, no?
I am not trying to highlight the weird obsessions of a huge chunk of internet users, nor do I want to pass a judgment on how fahash the world around us has become- the definition of fahash itself being relative in my opinion. I am merely disturbed by the rampant hypocrisy of our society. We walk on the streets wearing this holier-than-thou attitude and then do all kinds of sickening things behind closed doors. Such a society has no moral basis to do what we’re doing in the name of nationalism and so many other things. No wonder that hypocrisy is reflected in our government’s actions every day. Oddly, a lot of people acknowledge that as shown by the first response when I typed our President’s name.
Zardari:
Zardari kutta.
